What Is Cholera and Who Is at Risk?
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium, spread through contaminated water and food. Severe cases can lead to life-threatening dehydration within hours. While the risk for most tourists is low, it is significantly elevated for aid workers, relief workers, adventure travellers, and those visiting areas affected by flooding, conflict or disrupted water supplies in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia or Central America.
About the Cholera Vaccine (Dukoral)
Newmans Pharmacy stocks Dukoral the oral cholera vaccine available in the UK. Unlike most travel vaccines, Dukoral is taken as a drink, not an injection. Each dose is dissolved in a solution and consumed.
How to Take the Cholera Vaccine
The primary course consists of two doses taken one to six weeks apart. The course must be completed at least one week before travel. Our pharmacist will advise on the correct spacing and check for interactions with any antibiotics or antimalarials you may be taking, as these can interfere with the oral vaccine.
Dukoral prevent traveller's diarrhoea
Dukoral provides partial protection (approximately 60%) against traveller’s diarrhoea caused by ETEC bacteria for around three months after completing the course. It does not protect against all causes of travel-related diarrhoea.
